ERCOT Okays CenterPoint Shifting Houston Mobile Generators to San Antonio

Will Houston Mobile Generators Help All Texans?

CenterPoint's mobile generators will be moving to San Antonio after ERCOT greenlighted their use to back up the city's aging power system.
San Antonio ratepayers can breathe a bit easier this summer as CenterPoint's mobile generators are coming to town to help supply electric power to the city. They'll also be ready to help out in other towns.

Late last month, ERCOT approved the CenterPoint plan to move 15 Houston mobile generators to San Antonio. The city-owned electric provider, CPS Energy, has struggled with tight power supplies, especially during extreme weather. These units will help meet power demand as the city’s energy needs rise. The move aims to boost grid stability and lower power outage risks. And all Texans will benefit, not just those in the Alamo City.

Why San Antonio Needs More Power

San Antonio has grown fast, increasing its demand for energy. The city also relies on aging power plants, which can fail when demand spikes. CPS Energy wants to prevent blackouts, especially in summer heat waves and winter freezes. When the Houston mobile generators arrive, they will provide extra Texas power during peak usage times or emergencies.

In short order, the 15 units can power 300,000 homes in San Antonio and surrounding areas. And their mobility means they can move to other places, too, as needs arise. So, these units could serve any Texan’s home.

Who Pays for moving the mobile generators?

ERCOT manages Texas’ power grid and spreads costs across all customers. So, this means Texans outside Houston will help pay for moving these generators. Officials argue this is fair since these mobile units can move to support the entire grid, not just one city. While Houston customers will see slightly lower rates, all Texans will share the cost.

How This Affects Houston Customers

Since Houston no longer needs these units full-time, CenterPoint customers will save money. The maintenance and operation costs of the units will no longer show on their bills. The utility says the average bill will decrease by about $2 by 2027. So, the savings won’t be huge, and they won’t roll in right away.

ERCOT continues to work on improving Texas’ power grid. As cities grow and energy needs change, more shifts like this may happen in the future.

So whether you live in Houston or elsewhere, you’ll still pay for the mobile generators. But they’ll also be there for all Texans. And so will Texas Electricity Ratings when you need the best deal on a power plan. Find the best rates on a variety of contract options, and choose the one that works best for you!
