Why Is Texas the Place to Develop New Nuclear Power?

Image
Will New Nuclear Power Help Texas? Texas companies are striving to get on the leading edge of new nuclear technology that could help power more of the state. Learn why these small systems are safer, cheaper, and carbon free. As Texas electricity demand rises, Texas is quickly leading the way in new nuclear power. And many Texas companies are investing in advanced reactors. These reactors promise clean energy, fewer spiking electricity prices , and a more reliable and stable grid. Texas has a long history in energy innovation. It has a business-friendly environment, open land, and its own power grid. Consequently, these factors make it an ideal place for new nuclear power projects. Companies like TerraPower and X-energy see Texas as a hub for advanced nuclear tech . And more firms could follow.  What Are Small Modular Reactors? Traditional nuclear plants are large and costly to build. However, small modular reactors (SMRs) offer a new approach. These compact reactors are built in ...

TX Green Energy Under Attack as More Texans Struggle With Bills

Image
Will TX Green Energy Get Too Expensive? About one third of Texans can't afford their electric bills. But now a new proposed law seeks to tax green energy generators. Learn how this could raise your energy costs and not help ERCOT's reliability. Texas lawmakers have introduced a new bill that could make renewable energy more expensive. Senate Bill 1639 proposes a tax on electricity made from wind, solar, and other renewable sources. Natural gas and coal, however, would not face this tax. If passed, this law could hurt TX green energy while Texans already struggle with high power bills. Texas power customers deserve fair energy prices, but this bill could push their costs even higher. TX Green Energy Faces Unfair Challenges A recent survey found that 34% of Texans can’t afford their electricity bills . Renewable energy helps lower costs, but it faces challenges in Texas. The state does not have enough power lines to send electricity from where it’s made to where it’s ...

Texas House Bill to Allow Temporary TDU Rates

Image
Will Temporary TDU Rates Hurt You? A new proposed law will let your TDU impose higher rates on your bills until the PUC rules if it's fair or not. Learn why consumers end up paying more, anyway. A bill making its way through the Texas Legislature could change how electric transmission rates work. House Bill 3157 would let transmission and distribution utilities (TDUs) raise their fees while waiting for state approval. This means a TDU could raise rates at any time. In that case, Texas power customers would have to pay higher costs until the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) makes a final decision. If the PUC rejects the increase, the TDU must refund or credit customers. However, people would still pay more upfront. This could impact how much Texans pay for power through their electric provider . What Are Temporary TDU Rates? Right now, TDUs must wait until the PUC reviews and approves any rate changes. HB 3157 would change that. If a TDU raises rates, retail electric p...

ERCOT Okays CenterPoint Shifting Houston Mobile Generators to San Antonio

Image
Will Houston Mobile Generators Help All Texans? San Antonio ratepayers can breathe a bit easier this summer as CenterPoint's mobile generators are coming to town to help supply electric power to the city. They'll also be ready to help out in other towns. Late last month, ERCOT approved the CenterPoint plan to move 15 Houston mobile generators to San Antonio. The city-owned electric provider , CPS Energ y, has struggled with tight power supplies, especially during extreme weather. These units will help meet power demand as the city’s energy needs rise. The move aims to boost grid stability and lower power outage risks. And all Texans will benefit, not just those in the Alamo City. Why San Antonio Needs More Power San Antonio has grown fast, increasing its demand for energy. The city also relies on aging power plants , which can fail when demand spikes. CPS Energy wants to prevent blackouts, especially in summer heat waves and winter freezes. When the Houston mobile generators ...
